Our Approach

We believe that with a mission-aligned partner and the right resources, companies advancing U.S. and allied-partner interests can achieve success and strategic impact.

Guiding Principles

We are a mission-oriented investor dedicated to advancing U.S. and allied-partner interests. Our focus on national and economic security is guided by four principles that guide our investment decisions and approach to value creation.

Be Mission-Guided Investors

We are guided by the mission of addressing and strengthening critical needs for the United States and allied partner nations. We believe the private sector has a vital role in achieving a more secure and resilient future, and those who rise to the challenge now can succeed both commercially and purposefully over time.

Work Together Purposefully

Purpose-Built Team

Our team has been strategically assembled over many years and is designed so that investors, operators, technologists, and government experts all work together as one mission-driven group. Our team's size, depth, and breadth enables us to offer companies unmatched advice, access, and support.

Flexibility Is An Advantage

We understand the many evolving intersections of policy priorities, technological advancements, and industry-specific supply and demand imbalances. With such dynamics always in play, our funds have the flexibility to invest in mature businesses as well as venture, thus widening opportunity sets.

Join-Forces As Partners

In the investing world, capital is a commodity, but having a true "all-in" partnership is what really drives wins and creates a distinct competitive advantage. We join forces with our founders, management teams, and leaders to tackle challenges with the right resources, capabilities, and expertise at every step.

Flexibility to Pursue Diverse Investments

Our Supply Chain team’s extensive networks are further enhanced by our flexible investment mandate, which gives us greater ability to evaluate a broader spectrum of investment opportunities within our target guidelines.

Control Buyout

We have an extensive track record of partnering with established companies to provide strategic support to build market leadership.

Growth Equity

As strategic capital partners, we can help accelerate expansion through purpose-built capital structures and knowledge for the next stage of growth.

Strategic Opportunities

We tap into our entire platform to identify innovative solutions and resources for special situations and complex opportunities.

Venture Capital

We bring the full weight of experience, networks, and capital to back visionary founders addressing high-stakes problems.

Depth of Experience, Breadth of Expertise

Our investors collaborate with our operators; executives who are former government and policy leaders; and AI, data, and technology professionals. This integrated perspective allows us to analyze where the market dynamics align with policy tailwinds and emerging technologies to create distinct competitive advantages.

Our History

Cerberus has a long history of investing internal resources in advance of future opportunities. Examples include direct lending in 1990s; operational private equity in the 2000s; and residential investing and servicing in the 2010s.

In 2018, we began to assemble a team with the vision that the private sector could play a critical role in shoring up national security deficiencies. Years later, Cerberus launched our first dedicated funds with capital solely focused on advancing critical United States and allied partner interests.

1990s: An Early Pioneer

In 1992, Cerberus is founded during the U.S. Savings and Loan Crisis seeing the opportunity to acquire undervalued corporate debt. Our Corporate Credit platform has since invested well over $35 billion.

In 1995, we saw the opportunity to lend directly from private funds to growing middle-market companies. Today, direct lending private credit is a $2 trillion AUM industry.

By the late 1990s, Cerberus saw the value of having in-house operational experts from situations where debt converted into ownership stakes. The seeds of Operational Private Equity were planted, a common private equity model today.

2000s: No Strangers to Stress

Responding to the Asian Financial Crisis in the late 1990s taught us the value of going all-in on building a sizable team to solve complexity and respond to fundamental market dislocations.

In the early 2000s, Cerberus took this principle and became a first mover in building a Non-Performing Loan franchise in Europe.

In the late 2000’s, at a time when many investors were fleeing the market, we built an experienced team to invest in mortgages, loans, and real assets with proprietary operations to help manage risk.

Early 2010s: Expansion and Growing Focus on Defense

During the post-GFC period, we continued to grow many of our established investment platforms and launched new operating capabilities.

In Europe, we established loan servicing practices with local and regional knowledge and became a trusted partner to leading European financial institutions.

In the United States we expanded our private equity focus on defense and government sectors, notably acquiring DynCorp International, a leading government services contractor for $1.5 billion.

Late 2010s: Focusing on Technology and National Security

In 2018, we launched Cerberus Technology Solutions, an operating company focused exclusively on leveraging emerging technology, data, and advanced analytics.

We also began establishing a dedicated team of government and policy experts to work with our investment, technology and operations teams on areas where the United States had critical gaps.

As a result, Cerberus was able to make strategic investments in areas such as subsea fiber optic cable systems, undersea defense technologies, and hypersonics.

2020s: Boldly Investing in Security and Resilience

With the conviction that national security and supply chain investing was a generational need, we continued to add leaders to our government, technology, and operations teams.

In 2021, we began raising dedicated funds for national security and supply chain investments. Our Supply Chain strategy launched with $2.7 billion of total commitments. In 2022, we added venture investing in early-stage companies with pioneering technologies for commercial and government applications.

Today, our Supply Chain strategy continues to establish itself as a leader through investments in aerospace, defense, energy, critical minerals, water technologies, quantum computing, and more.
